About us
After 30+ years working big corporate jobs in the leisure and cultural services industries, James Coulton decided he wanted to work for himself. He set out to find something that matched his personality, enabled him to meet new people and revolved around the local area he is so passionate about. As a result, Select South West Tours was born.
Meet James
A local expert sharing his passion for Devon and Cornwall
James is as local as they come—raised on a South Devon dairy farm with Cornish roots in Falmouth and a Cornish home overlooking Dartmoor. His deep connection to both counties shines through in every tour. A highly qualified guide and experienced advanced driver, James holds multiple management and safety qualifications and is also a trained first aider. He’s as comfortable navigating tiny Devon lanes as he is sharing the region’s rich stories.
An accredited international tour guide, he’s passionate about showcasing the best of the South West. Since 2019, the guiding team has grown, with Mark, Nigel, Tim and now Karen joining to offer even more local knowledge. Two luxury vehicles are now available for tailored, unforgettable adventures.
The drive behind our tours
A passion for people, places and personalised experiences
James’ expertise and local insight have earned national recognition—he was invited by Visit England to create a South West itinerary and has worked with regional tourism boards to showcase Devon and Cornwall to international journalists. Known for his attention to detail, James carefully plans every tour to reflect each guest’s unique interests. His focus on outstanding customer service is long-standing, recognised with a Charter Mark from then Prime Minister John Major. In 2024 we became a registered Limited company, continuing to grow its exceptional reputation.
Away from tours
Sports fan, traveller, and true South Westerner!
Outside of touring, James is a devoted family man, married to Wendy with four grown-up children. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he’s especially passionate about rugby union and cricket, which he once played to a high amateur level—and still enjoys socially. He’s currently trying to master golf (with mixed results!) and has a love of travel, having visited over 50 countries worldwide. James’ favourite spots to share with guests include the dramatic clifftops of Botallack and the stunning Lizard Peninsula. And of course, no tour is complete without a proper Cornish pasty—something James takes very seriously!
