Cousin Jacks and Cousin Jennies
From Cornish emigration to your own family story
In the 19th century, many Cornish miners and their families emigrated in search of new opportunities. Known as “Cousin Jacks” and “Cousin Jennies”, they carried their skills and traditions around the world, leaving a heritage that descendants still come back to explore.
We plan your private tour around whatever you already know – names, dates, villages or old photographs. James and the team research the locations and arrange a comfortable route with your local guide. You might visit ancestral churches and graveyards, cottages, mines and harbours, or trace connections across Devon and Cornwall. Visits to Kresen Kernow can also be arranged in advance.
Family History FAQs
Your family history tour questions
Do I need to have researched my family tree already?
It helps to have names, dates and parishes, but you don’t need to be an expert. Send us what you have and we’ll tell you honestly what we can find and how best to plan your tour.
Can you include ancestors from both Cornwall and Devon?
Absolutely. We cover both counties every day, and many family trees cross the Tamar more than once.
Can we visit inside churches and see original records?
We’ll check opening times and contact churches and archives in advance wherever possible. Original records can be viewed at Kresen Kernow by appointment, and we’re happy to build this into your day.
Can a family history tour last more than one day?
Yes. Many guests combine a family history day with our wider Cornwall and Devon tours, or spread several ancestral areas over two or more days.
Can you take a larger family group?
Of course – from a couple to a full family reunion. For groups of ten or more, see our Group Tours page.
